William Douglas “Doug” Brown, 96, of Brevard, passed away on October 26, 2023. A native of Brevard, he was the son of the late Leonard and Ada Hamilton Brown. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Jane Huggins, Hazel Medlin, Shirley Arnette and Patricia “Trish” Collins; his brother, Robert “Bobby” Brown; and his son-in-law, Alan Scheaffer.

Born in Brevard and a graduate of Brevard High School, he was an active member of First Baptist Church in Brevard, joining on Christmas Day, 1938. He served his church as deacon, teaching the Boys Sunday School class for many years as well as serving at Little Cove Mission which was sponsored by First Baptist.  After high school he joined the US Navy Air Force in 1945 and served as an air crewman, training in both medium and heavy bombers and received additional training on aircraft carriers, fighter planes and dive bombers as well as radar school. After his discharge, he returned to Brevard where he met and married Perry Lee Merrill of Little River. They were blessed with one daughter, Linda Karen Brown.

He went to work for Olin/ Ecusta in 1951, remaining there until 1990, having obtained the title of Research Engineer. A kind and honorable man, he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Transylvania Regional Hospital, and served as a Boy Scout Troop 2 Scoutmaster. He enjoyed working at Gillespie-Evergreen Cemetery, repairs at the church and at home, and shooting pool.

His loving survivors include his wife of over 73 years, Perry Lee Brown; their daughter, Linda Sheaffer, his sister Janice Brown Osborne; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will have a private memorial service.
