Virginia Stone

April 28, 1919 — September 6, 2016

Brevard, North Carolina

Virginia Eileen Cooper Stone, 97, of Brevard, NC passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2016. A native of Sedan, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Emery Franklin and Myrtle Ostland Cooper. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Stone and her sister Kathleen Dickert.
After graduating from Pittsburg State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas, she taught English for a short while before going to work as a civilian for the armed services while her future husband, Richard, was in the service during WWII. They were married in California's Wee Kirk o' the Heather Chapel at Forrest Lawn in Glendale California and then settled in Battle Creek, Michigan with her husband to be near her parents. There she taught piano to elementary through high school age children before moving with her family to Katonah, NY and continued teaching piano to mostly high school age children. While there she served as treasurer for the New York State Music Teachers Association. She also served as organist for the Katonah Methodist Church for several years while continuing to teach piano before retiring to Connestee Falls in Brevard, NC where she continued to teach piano to a select few adults in the community.

Listed in Woman's Whose Who, she stayed involved in community musical activities, including piano accompaniment for musical programs at Connestee Falls. She served as organist for First Baptist Church for a decade, also playing piano or organ for local funerals, weddings and accompanying other artists for their programs. She was a member of the organizing committee for what is now Brevard Philharmonic.

Virginia enjoyed attending the many music events over the last 32 years in and around Brevard, NC. She moved to College Walk during the last 10 years and continued to be musically involved by helping to organize and play the piano and organ for the weekly vesper services at College Walk.

Mrs. Stone is survived by her sons: Stanley Stone of Lawrenceville, GA and Richard L. Stone and wife Norma Jean of Sulligent, Al.

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Stone will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 16, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Brevard with Rev. Tommy Crocker officiating.
