Velma Lee Hawkins

Velma Lee Jones Hawkins, 89, of Brevard, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 after a lengthy illness. Born in Jackson County, North Carolina she was the oldest child of the late Henry Nelson Jones and Beulah Owen Jones. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis M. Hawkins, their son, Charles Nelson Hawkins and daughter-in-law Denise Hawkins; her brothers Carroll Jones and Lionel Jones and grandson, Shane Nelson.

A member of Cashiers Baptist Church, she and her husband worked together in business in the area. She enjoyed working with her hands and was a skilled seamstress and woodworker. She enjoyed many Sunday afternoons watching NASCAR races.  

She enjoyed reading, but her family, her children and grandchildren, was the heart of her world. 

Her loving survivors include her sisters. Olivene Lyday of Brevard and Anna Owen of Pisgah Forest; sisters-in-law Frances Jones and Doris Jones, both of Pisgah Forest; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews and a number of great- and great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Velma Hawkins will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, May 1, 2023 in the chapel of Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremations with Rev. Lamar Owen officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:00pm. Interment will follow the service at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Pisgah Forest.
