Shirley Z. Whitmire

Shirley Z. Whitmire, 103, of Brevard, NC, passed peacefully on May 8, 2024, after a long and blessed life.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford Addrian Meischke and Grace Elizabeth Zachary; her husband, Howard Richard Whitmire in 1989; three brothers, James Zachary, William Zachary, and Jack Zachary, and her sister, Margaret McCall.

She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Clifford Addrian and Grace Elizabeth Meischke. A lifelong resident of Transylvania County, she attended Brevard High School and went on to work for Ecusta Paper Manufacturing in the Endless Belt department.

Her faith and love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was prominent in her life; as a small child, she was so overjoyed to attend church with her grandmother that she would skip the whole way there. This deep devotion prompted her to be an active member at First Baptist Church, Brevard, NC where she was dearly loved by all. Shirley loved working in the garden, especially with her flowers. She was an avid reader, but the moments where she was the happiest were the moments she was spending time with the ones she loved and held close to her heart.

She is survived by her son, Donald Whitmire (Sheila) of Waynesville; two grandsons, Chad Whitmire (Britney) of Holly Springs, N.C. and Derek Whitmire (Ashley) of Simpsonville, S.C., and her four beautiful great grandchildren; Payton, Cooper, Kinsley and Maeve, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, May 13, 2024, in the Chapel of Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremation with Rev. Jeff Maynard officiating.   The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral, 1:00 PM-2:00 PM.
