Ruth Elizabeth Clement

Ruth Elizabeth Clement, 89, of Portland, Oregon, passed away on May 30, 2023, surrounded by love.

Born on December 26, 1933, to Frederick Cole and Elizabeth Stettler Roberts in Philadelphia, Ruth immediately brought joy and laughter into the world. She went on to graduate from Maranatha High School, in 1951. After graduating from high school, Ruth took a job with Aetna Insurance Company in Philadelphia, where she met her future brother-in-law who in turn introduced her to her life-long love.

In 1952, Ruth met William (Bill) Alden Clement and the two began their adventures. Ruth and Bill were married in May 1954 and for the next ten years they lived and traveled in all regions of the United States following Bill’s work opportunities.  During this time, they had three children, David Alden Clement (Philadelphia, PA 1957), Barbara Lynn Clement (Cheyenne, WY,1960), and Beverly Ann (Clement) Wood (Yuba City, CA, 1962) before settling permanently in Brevard, NC (1965).

Ruth was a fiercely dedicated mom and was always available with an attentive ear, a kind heart, and firm encouragement.  With Bill, she raised all three children to find their spiritual faith, to be kind and respectful of all people, and to take time for those in need.  She found ways to demonstrate such lessons in how she went about her life, being a dedicated member of her church, being kind to everyone regardless of circumstances, visiting elderly shut-ins and providing transportation and assistance when needed. She worked with the Transylvania County Hospital volunteer program and for a few years in the Brevard High School lunchroom, always sharing smiles and encouragement.  Her motto was “But for the grace of God, there go I”.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, William (Bill) Clement; her parents, Frederick and Elizabeth Roberts; and her sister, Evelyn (Roberts) Peck (Allen). She leaves behind her three children, David Alden Clement, Barbara Lynn Clement (Mark Kogut), and Beverly Ann (Clement) Wood (Scott Wood), and her two grandchildren Lucas Alden Kogut and Emma Alexandra Kogut.
