Rachel Cathey Daniels, 95, of Brevard, died Saturday, April 23, 2022. A native of Henderson County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late William Johnson and Edith Blythe Cathey. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert L. Daniels.
The couple made their home in Brevard, where Ms. Daniels was a long-time professor of mathematics at Brevard College, teaching generations of students. On her retirement, an endowment was established in her honor at Brevard College in the Mathematics Department. Ms. Daniels was active in the American Association of University Women, the Transylvania County Library, the First United Methodist Church in Brevard, the Schenck Job Corps, Meals on Wheels of Brevard, and worked and contributed to many other charitable organizations.
She was preceded in death by her sisters Alma Lee Davis of Swan Quarter, N.C. and Virginia Forrest of Hillsboro NC, her brothers William Johnson Cathey, Jr., of Rosman, NC and Samuel Cathey of Skyland, N.C.; her son-in-law, Patrick Mulholland of Oak Ridge, TN, and her daughters-in-law, Connie Johnson of Penrose, NC and Laurie Davison of Lexington KY.
She is survived by her sons Robert L. Daniels Jr. of Penrose and Richard S. Daniels and his wife Peggy of Asheville; daughters R. Cathey Daniels of Oak Ridge, TN and Mary B. Daniels of Lexington, KY; grandchildren, John Daniels and his wife Allison Kirkner of Charlottesville VA., Jordan Daniels and his wife Kate Youngblood of New Orleans, LA., Rachel Garrison and her husband Matt of Southern Pines, N.C., Sam Daniels and his wife Meredith of Asheville, Anna Taubenheim and her husband Ty of Oak Ridge, TN, Rick Daniels-Mulholland and his wife Lindsay of Clinton, TN, Joe Daniels-Mulholland of Boston, and Yakob and Cathey Davison of Lexington; and great grandchildren Callie and Emma Garrison, Eli and Claire Daniels, Charlie, Jackson, Henry and Ben Taubenheim, Ellie and Zoe Mulholland, Reggie Daniels and Louise Daniels.
Her Memorial Service will be held May 7 at 2 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 325 S. Broad Street, Brevard, where she was a member for 67 years. A reception will follow the service at the church.
The family respectfully requests that attendees wear masks.
