Odell Head

July 14, 1920 — November 7, 2009

Pisgah Forest, North Carolina

Emily "Odell" (McCall) Head

A long and productive life ended softly and peacefully for Odell Head on the evening of November 7, 2009.

A woman of culture and refinement, and an emblem of Southern determination and creativity. She was born to Otis and Bessie McCall, in Crab Creek, Henderson County. July 14, 1920. Her family moved to Transylvania County, where she graduated from Brevard High School. She married Robert Head, June 4, 1943. The two of them knew no bounds to working hard, and together they prospered and lived the American dream. They had two children, Carol Diane, of Pisgah Forest, and Robert William, Jr, "Bill". Her son, Bill, preceded her in death. She has 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. They will always remember her fondly, as Mama Dell.

Her beloved husband Robert died suddenly and tragically, Nov. 11, 1992. As husband and wife they traveled extensively. They moved to Michigan from Brevard, and later to Alabama, before retiring to Pisgah Forest. Nothing ever seemed the same after his death.

Odell was known throughout the area not only as an artist in painting, drawing, and stained glass, but also known by many adults, who as children were taught art under her tutelage. This teaching of children and adults was her greatest pleasure, and privilege. She spent a lifetime improving upon her skills in workshops and continuing education. She is still remembered and loved by her many students. Her creative drive has been handed down to the generations to come. To her own progeny, her legacy is, the example of, creativity, as a tool of pleasure, and of labor, and its legitimacy in a life well lived.

Odell was bright light in many lives. She had that famous Southern charm, and she could hold you enraptured by her stories and tales, of her, times and places.
In her final days at Tore's Home, she made deep and eternal friendships. The family sends their love and thanks to Tore's Home and its marvelous staff for the care, and most of all the love they showed to Mama Dell.

We wish to invite all friends and fellow travelers to a last farewell on Thursday evening 7-9pm at Moore Funeral Home 100 N. Country Club Rd, Brevard, NC; Services and internment Friday 11am, also at Moore. Final viewing will take place from 10 to 10:45am, before the service.
