Norman H. Macoy, aged 87, passed away on February 22, 2024 in Brevard, NC. He had left Fairfield, CT with his spouse, Suzanne, in 1995 and moved to Ft. Wayne, IN. He then retired to North Carolina in September 2002.  

Born September 30, 1936, in Newark, NJ, he was the son of Eugene Wilson Macoy and Ruth Norman Macoy, both of Chicago, IL and the brother of the late Martha Macoy. He is survived by his beloved wife Suzanne of 61 years, two sons, Ian (Kelly) of Bluemont, VA and David (Kristy) of Fairfield, CT, three grandchildren, Matthew and Jack of New York, NY and Catherine of Bluemont, VA, and four nieces and nephews, Christina, Matthew, Allison and Seth. 

Norm was raised in Greenwich, CT. Following high school, he served for 8 years with the United States Naval Reserve serving primarily on the East coast. He spent his undergraduate years at Union College in Schenectady, NY and attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT for graduate school. While at Union, he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Society. While at Wesleyan, he was elected to Sigma Xi, an honorary professional scientific society. In 1962, he enrolled at Massachusetts Institute of Technology for post-graduate courses to round out his academic preparation.  

Norman had a long professional career as an electro-optical physicist in the aerospace industry, applying infrared spectroscopic optical instrumentation to satellite-based remote sensing surveillance techniques of military, commercial aviation and meteorological sources. He also served as an adjunct professor of physics at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut and volunteered his resources within several communities.  

Later in life he was affiliated with the American Institute of Parliamentarians for 12 years and served for two years as a paid parliamentarian for the state of Connecticut. 

While in Fairfield, CT he served as a Boy Scout Leader for many years and received its District Award of Merit in 1980. He served on the municipal legislative body for 14 years and attained the office of Town Moderator (1989-1991) and was cited by the State of Connecticut’s General Assembly “in recognition of his many years of service as a member and Moderator.” He also served 9 years on the First Congregational Church’s Board of Trustees and then became its Moderator for one term, served on a Title VIII Housing senior citizens local Board of Directors, and served 3 years with the Bridgeport, CT Habitat for Humanity, Inc. affiliation.  

While in Ft. Wayne, IN he served on the Plymouth Congregational Church’s Board of Trustees and 3 years with the local Habitat affiliate. 

While in Brevard, NC he was a member of the Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church and served as Clerk of Session in 2005. He also served for 19 years with the Transylvania County Habitat affiliate in various positions such as Construction Chairperson, Director, and Board Officer. 

During his career, he was awarded 1 patent, and authored or co-authored 20 technical papers in numerous publications, 6 municipal ordnances, several op-ed pieces, and 2 major slide presentations for the Workforce Housing Coalition and the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute in 2005. 

Interests and hobbies included 11 straight years of live theater productions (set construction, set design, lighting and management), family genealogy, parliamentary procedure, photography, tennis, and golf. 

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 16th at 11 AM at the Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church.
