Neil Van Syckle

July 31, 1927 — October 16, 2022

Brevard, NC

Neil Lavern Van Syckle passed away on October 16, 2022.  He was born on July 31, 1927 in Barry County, Michigan.  A dedicated husband, father and friend, he was selfless in his dedication to his family, caring for his wife Joanne through almost a decade of Alzheimer's disease while still helping his children in any way he could.

Mr. Van Syckle was born on a small family farm during the Depression, enlisting in the armed forces near the end of World War II.  While his dream was to be a pilot for his country, the war effort was winding down before he got that opportunity and so he enlisted as a radio control operator for the US Army and was stationed in the Philippines.   After the war, he attended Michigan State University where he would meet his future wife, Joanne White.  While at Michigan State, he was the Captain of the MSU Pistol Team and majored in Geology.   Mr. Van Syckle spent the bulk of his career as a Personnel and Benefits Administrator where he helped countless people receive healthcare, pensions and insurance.

A passionate animal lover, Neil and Joanne moved from Michigan to Brevard in 1994 and were immediately taken in by the natural beauty and abundance of wildlife, especially at their home.  He passed from this life in that home at age 95, surrounded by his surviving children, Mary, Anne and Richard along with his animals who were keeping watch outside.
