Nancy Lee Gaston Brookshire, 85, of Pisgah Forest, NC went to be with her Lord on September 27, 2017. She was born in Buncombe County, NC to the late Clarence Perry (Buck) and Lois Carter Gaston. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Cliff Brookshire and her brother, Sonny Gaston.
Much of her life was devoted to teaching school and she taught 31 years, mostly in Haywood and Transylvania counties. She loved teaching physical education best but also taught math and science. She was elected North Carolina's Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 1989 and was a member of the NEA and NCAE.
In 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, Cliff Brookshire, and enjoyed supporting his football teams at Canton, Owen, Brevard, Tuscola, and Enka. When Nancy retired in 1989, they bought a motorhome and traveled across the country. She enjoyed playing golf at Glen Cannon, Connestee Falls, and Sherwood Forest and had many golfing and bridge buddies.
She was a 1949 graduate of Sand Hill High School and of the Women's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro) in 1953. She was raised Presbyterian, became a Baptist, and after living several years at Lake Junaluska, became a Methodist. She loved the English Chapel Methodist Church in Pisgah Forest and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Brevard.
She is survived by two daughters, Becky Brookshire (Grover DeHart) of Marshall, Cindy Davidson (Wayne) of Randleman, and son Jeff Brookshire (Dawn) of Pisgah Forest. Her grandchildren are Jeremy Brookshire (Kathleen), Eric Schneider (Katie), Daniel Brookshire (Kristen), Laura Brookshire, Kyle Schneider, Nancy Davidson Bullard (Seth), Kallen DeHart, and Sarah DeHart. Two great-grandchildren are Dylan and Maggie Brookshire, and her sister is Martha Nall of Lake Norman.
Services will be at Brevard First United Methodist Church on Monday, October 2nd. There will be a visitation at 10:00am followed by a funeral service at 11:00. Interment will be at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to First United Methodist Church, 325 N. Broad St., Brevard, NC 28712 or to the Salvation Army at 126 N. Caldwell St. in Brevard, NC 28712.
