Marie Adams Callender

Fountain Inn, SC - Marie Adams Callender died Sunday, August 30, 2009 at McCall Hospice House. She was born in Anson County, NC, on May 18, 1920 and was the eldest daughter of the late Irving and Bertha Adams. After the death of her father, Marie assisted her mother in the running of the household and the rearing of her younger siblings. In 1941, she moved to Brevard, NC, where she attended Brevard College and met her future husband, L.E. Callender, an employee of Olin Paper Company, who died in 1986. She was preceded in death by a sister Bernice.

A dedicated mother, Marie was also a tireless volunteer and community supporter. In 1977, she was named Transylvania County's "Woman of the Year", primarily for her work with the Cedar Mountain Community Center; her husband, L.E., also had the honor of receiving the "Man of the Year'' award that year.

After the death of her husband, Marie spent much time traveling with her beloved sister, Bernice visiting her family. The death of Bernice and her own failing eyesight forced Marie to slow down in recent years. She divided her time-living for some months in Ohio and the rest of her time in Fountain Inn, SC with her daughters.

In her final weeks and enjoying good health, Marie had the chance to see her great grandchildren, visit her home in Cedar Mountain, and renew old friendships. After a brief illness, she passed away peacefully on a cool summer night, surrounded by family.

She is survived by one son; Lee Callender and his wife Jane of Atlanta; two daughters, Sandra Cook and her husband Stewart of Fountain Inn, SC and Marilyn Gilbreath and her husband Ken of Cincinnati, Ohio, one brother; Travis Adams of Cheraw, SC and one sister; Lois Poole of Cheraw, SC, five grandchildren; Kathleen, Casey, Melinda, Greg and Lisa; four great grandchildren; Frankie, Ethan, Joel and Kaitlyn; and long-time family friends, Doug Corn, Jr., Viki Alvarez, and Jeff Melton..

Graveside services will be held 11:30 AM, Friday, September 4, 2009 at Pisgah Gardens, Pisgah Forest, NC with family friend Dr. Oliver "Butch" Skerrett officiating. The family will receive friends 6 - 8 PM Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Moore Funeral Home, Brevard, NC.

Memorials may be made to Cincinnati Association for the Blind, 2045 Gilbert Avenue, Cincinnati, Oh 45202-1490 or Legacies Wellness Community, 3854 A Paxton Avenue, Cincinnati, Oh 45209
