Lois Smoot peacefully and triumphantly passed on July 29, 2022 at the age of 94. Born in Seaford, later moving to Newport News, Virginia, she graduated from Morrison High School in 1945, and married Gerald E. Smoot later that same year. Lois began work at Langley Field, Hampton, as Gerald left to serve in the Navy near the end of WWII. She had an enjoyable career as Payroll Supervisor with Newport News Public Schools Transportation Center, retiring at the age of 62.
Lois was a lifelong artist, painting with the Smithfield group Half-Baked Painters for 10 years. After retirement, Lois was not ready to rest on her laurels. She learned the art of stained glass and worked with daughter Phyllis for 10 years as a glass artisan. She had extraordinary patience for the work, and left many architectural and residential installations as her legacy. Many in the glass and painting community will miss Lois' beautiful blue eyes and sweet smile.
Lois was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn W. Shockley, stepfather Carlton W. Shockley, father Bernard B. DeAlba, brothers Bernard B. DeAlba, Jr. and Kenneth G. Shockley (Patsy), and grandson Zachary Ryan Smith.
Lois is survived by daughters Phyllis S. Wells and Catherine S. Eason (Steve), and son David G. Smoot (Trina), brother Carlton Shockley (Donna), five grandchildren, Phillip Eason (Carolyn), Leigh Lipsi (Jotham), Sarah Hinrichsen (Stewart), Nicholas Smoot, and Nathan Koester, as well as seven great-grandchildren, Stevie, Josephine, Ezra, Sonny, Eli, Adeline and Rhodes.
Son-in-law Steve Eason will lead a graveside service at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News on September 1st at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family invites you to make a donation to your favorite charity in Lois' memory.
