Brevard, North Carolina

Lois Barnette Kellar, 102, passed away February 18, 2019, in Brevard. Born November 3, 1916 in Henderson County, she was the daughter of the late Adgar Washington Barnette and his wife, Mary Hollingsworth. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul S. Kellar; her eldest son, Teddy S. Kellar; her sisters Stella Gilliland, Ethel Owens, Eva Jones, Myrtle Barnette, Lela Price, Margaret Bromfield and Mary Alta Payne; and brothers Samuel and Thomas.

Lois' family moved to Brevard when she was just four years old and her father became Chief of Police in Brevard. The family came by train to their new hometown, and their furniture and a cow were brought in one of the Bromfield Ice Company trucks. Lois' family lived on Whitmire Street for a number of years, but when her father became Deputy Sheriff of Transylvania County, the family moved to family quarters in the jailhouse behind the current court house in Brevard.
Lois, a member of First Baptist Church of Brevard, joined the church when she was ten-years-old - some 92 years ago, making her their longest standing member. She faithfully attended until she became homebound in recent years.

Employed for many years by Belk's Department Store in downtown Brevard, she worked in women's sporting goods and ready-to-wear clothing, first as a clerk and then as a buyer for the department. She retired from Belk in 1974.

Surviving Mrs. Kellar are her sons Robert P. Kellar and his wife, Sara; James R. Kellar and his wife Mary, all of Brevard and Ronald B. Kellar of Kenova, WV; grandchildren Ted S. Kellar, Jr., of Coral Springs, FL, Jeffrey Kellar of Port St. Lucie, FL, Michael Kellar of Orlando, FL, Martha Taylor of Brevard, Robert Lee Kellar of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Tammy Pressley of Brevard, Lynne Sprinkle or Morganton, NC; and nieces Margaret Cole of Arden and Carolyn Gaines of Columbia, SC.

Lois was also blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
