Katherine Medford

Katherine Shufford Medford, 101, of Pisgah Forest, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2023. A native of Transylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Franklin Perry and Beulah Merrill Shufford. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Hubert E. Medford, who passed away in 1994, and her very special friend and caretaker, James Pringle Macfie.

She attended Brevard High School, Brevard College and was a graduate of Western Carolina University. She taught school for 34 years in the public schools of Henderson and Transylvania Counties.

After retiring, she spent many winters in Umatilla Florida but was always eager to return to the mountains of North Carolina. She enjoyed feeding the many birds in her yard each spring. She enjoyed cooking, reading, cross-stitch and needlepoint. She always welcomed and loved to have family, friends and former students come to her home to visit.

She had been the oldest living member of Little River Baptist Church.

She is survived by her self-selected children, her “boy” Dennis and wife Susan Frady, and Tracey Littleton as well as several loving nieces and nephews, cousins and special friends.

Funeral Services for Katherine Medford will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2023, at Little River Baptist Church in Penrose, NC with Rev. Marc Reynolds officiating. She will lie in state from noon until the time of the service at the church.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.
