Sapphire, North Carolina

Joseph Thomas DeLage, 96, of Sapphire, passed into God's loving care on Wednesday, July 12, 2017. Joe was born in Detroit, Michigan to the late Henry and Rose Blanche DeLage. He grew up in Dearborn, Michigan where he was an active member and leader of the Boy Scouts of America, Troup D.

During WWII, Joe joined the Ar my Air Corps and saw 3 ½ years of service in North Africa, Sicily, France, England and D-Day. After the war he became a teacher and head of the Industrial Arts Department at Fordson High School in Dearborn.

Upon retiring in 1981, he and his wife Kate spent many happy years in Stuart, Florida and at their cottage on Georgian Bay, Tobermory, Ontario, Canada. Each year they would sail their sloop, "Windward", to Stuart and back to Tobermory. Finally they decided to settle down and moved to lovely Sapphire Valley 22 years ago.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Catherine (Kate); sister Jeanne and sister-in-law, Loretta Darrow of Denver, CO; and many nieces and nephews.

The Funeral mass for Joe will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Sapphire. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery, behind the church. The family will receive friends from 10:30 - 11:00 a.m., prior to the service.
