Joseph Benson

d. February 15, 2017

Brevard, North Carolina

Joseph William Benson went home to be with his Beloved Lord February 15, 2017.
A native of Transylvania County, he was the eldest son of the late William Ralph and Julia Johnson Benson and was husband of Sue Benson, the most devoted and loving wife and caregiver a man could ever have.

Survivors include his son Danny and wife Karen of Atlanta, Georgia, his step-daughter, Rebecca Rouland and husband, Chris of Greensboro, Georgia, his step-son Jim Isbell and wife Theresa of Atlanta, Georgia, and five grandchildren, Jordan Benson and wife Lauren of Augusta, Georgia, Braeden and Landry Benson, and Lauren and Jake Flick of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Garren (Roy) and Linda Peeples (Paul) of Brevard, two brothers, Mike (Debbie) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Doug (Martha) of Pensacola, Florida. He was predeceased by his first wife Geraldine and his brother Johnny. A large number of nieces and nephews also survive.

He loved his family and friends very much. His grandchildren were especially dear to him. Because his personality, kindness, and sense of humor endeared him to many people, he was often referred to as "Good Joe." He loved racing, NASCAR, Ford vehicles, Coca Cola and collecting Coke memorabilia, clocks, flashlights, antiques, and three special pets, Spunky, Bitsy, and Prissy.

He was an Army veteran and a master at repairing anything mechanical. This love and skill began when, as a very young boy, he took his mother's iron apart and put it back together just to see how it worked. This youthful mischief led to a long career in the appliance business.
After twenty-six years of service, he retired from the Amana Corporation as the Southeast's Field Representative in Specialty Training. During his time with this company he was instrumental in working on the microwave oven. His retirement business was in heating and air-conditioning, and he jokingly but truthfully used the slogan, "If I can't fix it, it ain't broke."

A devout Christian, he read his Bible every day. He once stated that he had read the Bible through at least fourteen times. Two of his favorite verses were Jeremiah 33:3: "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not," and Hebrews 11: 1: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

At his request a graveside service will be held at Cathy's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rosman Church of God in care of the Reverend Michael Pressley PO Box 1707 Brevard, NC 28712.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Mr. Frankie Waters, Mr. Bobby Eubanks, Mr. Bobby Hunter, Mr. Fred West, and Mr. Fred Galloway for their friendship and kindnesses through the years. The family would also like to thank Dr. Tom Rennard of Asheville Internists for his outstanding medical care and friendship.
