John Allen Lamar, 89, of Brevard, died Monday, March 3, 2008 at Solace in Asheville.



Born in Tampa, FL, September 23, 1918, he was the son of Cornelius Perry Lamar and Mary McCluskey Lamar. A WWII verteran, he married Margaret Vogt Lamar on October 2, 1943.



He and his wife moved to Transylvania County in 1977 upon his retirement from Sears Roebuck & Company, after 37 years. He was Store Planner for the Southeastern Territory of Sears. After moving to Brevard, he enjoyed becoming an active member of the community, serving on the administrative board of First United Methodist Church and as a member of the steering committee for the 125th Anniversay Celebration of Transylvania County. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and an avid watercolorist with over 200 paintings of Western North Carolina. He was a 1940 graduate of Auburn University and a life-long War Eagle.



Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Margaret ; children, Mary Lamar Adams and her husband Craig Gibson Adams of Brevard ; and John Allen Lamar Jr. And his wife, Mary Rybolt Lamar of Orlando, FL ; three grandchildren, Lamar David Adams of Portland, OR, Laurie Lamar Camacho and Leslie Lamar Harmeson of Orlando, FL ; and three great grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother William Perry Lamar.



Funeral services will be held at 3 :00 PM on Sunday, March 9, 2008, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Jordan and Rev. Kerry Purselle officiating. Burial will follow at the Gillespie-Evergreen Cemetery.



Family will receive visitors at 2 :30 PM prior to the service.



Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church.
