John R. "Jack" Hudson, Jr., age 85, died at home on November 6, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents, John Randolph Hudson and Martha Edmond Breese Hudson and sister Martha Lee Hudson Scruggs.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Sprott Atkinson Hudson, his daughter Martha Breese Hudson, her fiancé Robert Goodwin, and grandson Harrison Philip Lowder. "Jack" was born in Brevard, attended school in Brevard and graduated from Christ School in Arden, NC. He was an ardent supporter of Christ School, having served as President of the Christ School Alumni Association and as a member of the Christ School Board of Directors. He attended Brevard College, and the University of Maryland Overseas Extension in England while serving in the U.S. Air Force. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an AB degree and a JD degree, he practiced law briefly in Franklin, NC. Returning to Brevard, he practiced with the firm of Hamlin, Potts, Ramsey, and Hudson, then with Potts and Hudson, and finally with Hudson and Peterson. Before he retired in 1997, he had served as President of the Transylvania County Bar Association, the 29th District Bar Association, and President of the North Carolina Municipal Attorneys Association. He was several times the County Attorney, long time Brevard City Attorney, and Rosman Town Attorney.
He was honored to be a long-time Chairman of the Transylvania County Election Board, as well as Chairman of District One of the Election Board Members, and was on the State Executive Committee of Election Board Members.
Recently, the Brevard Lions Club honored Jack with a bronze plaque commemorating his 58 years of service to the club. He served as President twice, and was a District One Zone Chairman, was a Melvin Jones Fellow, and for the last 20 years was program chairman. Jack believed firmly in giving back to the community and accepted responsibility without complaint.
Other community service included Presidency of the Brevard Jaycees, and selection as the Distinguished Young Man of the Year in 1964. He was the President of the Transylvania Youth Association for more than 40 years, was twice President of the Transylvania County Historical Association and was active in supporting the Transylvania Heritage Museum. He was a long time SCORE counselor and on the Executive Committee of the Schenck Job Corps Community Relations Council. In Sherwood Forest, he was President of the Homeowners Association and, for many years, Chairman of the Sherwood Forest Men's Golf League.
His church was a central part of Jack's life. A member of St. Philips Episcopal Church since birth, he served as Vestry member and Senior Warden several times, Lay Reader for 50 years, Choir member since boyhood, and Chairman of the Memorials Committee.
Jack was a dedicated Democrat, an avid golfer, and self-confessed UNC Tar Heel sports fanatic. He loved watching birds, and in retirement enjoyed numerous birding trips with his wife throughout the US and abroad.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. A private burial will be in St. Paul's in the Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be given to St. Philips Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 256 E. Main St, Brevard, NC 28712, or the Transylvania Heritage Museum, PO Box 2347, Brevard, NC 28712.
