John Robert Brinkley

John Robert Brinkley, 86, of Brevard, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 after a long illness.  John is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 30 years, Wanda Owen Brinkley and his parents A.P. Brinkley and Martha Moody Brinkley Turbyfill.

John was born in Elk Park, NC and graduated from Cranberry High School.  He served in the United States Army.  He lived briefly in Indiana working in a steel mill.  He eventually took a job with Dupont in Brevard where he worked until he retired.

John is survived by his two children, his hunting and fishing buddy, John Walter (Danette) and Amy Brinkley Bennett (David) as well as his four favorite humans, his grandchildren; Walter Cade Brinkley, Madison Lark Brinkley, Aaron Blake Bennett and Aiden Clark Bennett.

He is also survived by a brother, Edward Brinkley of Gary, Indiana and a sister, Jean Turbyfill Ollis of Elk Park, NC and many nieces and nephews whom he also adored.

John was a jokester, and an avid outdoorsman who spent his spare time hunting or fishing, depending on the season.  He loved camping with his family, especially at Lake D.E.R.A. from late spring until early fall.  He treasured spending almost 50 spring breaks with his family on Lake Hartwell at Tugaloo State Park in North Georgia crappie fishing.  A member of the Elk River Fishing Club, John spent time fly fishing the Elk River up into his 80’s.

John was loved by all who knew him. He was always willing to help anyone in need. Even after the life changing loss of his arm in an accident, he could fix anything and was always willing to serve his neighbors, friends and his church (Grace Baptist of Brevard).  In his later years, he would spend most days pulling weeds and keeping the end of Green Acres (where he was the self proclaimed mayor) beautiful.

A devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend to many, John will be missed by all who knew him. The family rejoices that this is only a temporary separation as they know John is in his eternal home.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Grace Baptist Church in Brevard. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, prior to the service.  John will be buried at a private graveside service at Mac McCall Cemetery in the Silversteen Community, Lake Toxaway NC.
