Jewell Sentelle Daniel - Musician and Music Teacher

Jewell Sentelle Daniel, beloved musician and music teacher and native of Transylvania County, passed away peacefully at her home on January 3, 2009, with friends by her side. She is survived by her sister Ellen; her son Richard "Brad" Daniel; her two faithful canine companions, Boots and Cocoa; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

The daughter of Arthur and Rosa Lee Allison Sentelle, Jewell grew up on a mountain farm close to the Davidson River. There she and her sister Ellen and three late brothers, Bud, Frisco, and Kenny, played with horses, cattle, pigs, chickens, cats, rabbits, and dogs. She received her Associates of Arts degree from Brevard College and spent her life involved with music.

In 1958, she married Ronald Daniel after he convinced her that he was the one for her. Ron, the son of Merrill and Helen Harris Daniel, grew up in South Georgia with his brother and sister. A graduate of Western Carolina University, he spent his professional career at Ball Brothers Corporation in Asheville where he ascended to the position of Eastern Regional Manager over all east coast Ball Brothers plants. On several occasions, he turned down promotions that would have required Jewell and him to leave the beauty of the Western North Carolina mountains.

Jewell loved to laugh and entertain, and music was always a big part of her life. She excelled in it from an early age and taught piano, voice, organ, and handbells most of her adult life. She also played the drums and hammer dulcimer and taught herself to play the bass guitar a few years ago. Jewell was a member of countless bands, vocal groups, church choirs, and ensembles. She was a founding member of the Transylvania Choral Society and served on the Board for many years. She also played at numerous church services, weddings, and funerals.

A businesswoman, she was active in the community, serving in organizations, such as the Lion's Club, the Davidson River Cemetery Corporation, the Allison Deavor House, and the Transylvania Garden Club.

A private graveside service will be held for family members only. The family will receive visitors at the First Baptist Church sanctuary in Brevard at 2 pm on Thursday, January 8, 2009, and the memorial service will begin at 3 pm.
