George Thaddeus Perkins, Jr., 86, former Brevard businessman and community leader passed away December 5, 2008 after a period of declining health. Born February 24, 1922 in Adako, NC, he was the son George T. Perkins Sr. and Callie Webb Perkins. A graduate of Morganton High School, Perkins attended Wake Forest University on a music scholarship.

Mr. Perkins was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army; he was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge and recipient of the Purple Heart.



After the war, Mr. Perkins moved to Brevard and joined his parents in their commercial laundry business. He owned and operated Perkins Oil Company.

He was an active member of many community organizations including the Rotary Club and the Brevard Jaycees, and was instrumental in building the original Franklin Park in the early 1950's. He also served on the board of directors for First Citizens' Bank.

Perkins was a founding member of Glen Cannon Country Club, serving for many years on their board of directors, and he served two terms as Club President.

He married Betty Aycock Perkins in 1948. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty and by his son, George T. Perkins III.

He is survived by his son Jimmy Perkins, his wife Dee Dee and two grandchildren Adam and Allie. Also surviving are his brother Alfred Perkins and his wife Gypsy of Hendersonville; and two nephews Alfred and Thad Perkins and two nieces Gypsy Perkins Adams and Nancy Perkins Saifi and their families.

An avid golfer and card player, he will long be remembered for his vivid storytelling and robust personality.

Mr. Perkins was a member and former deacon of Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church.

A celebration of George's life is planned for Wednesday, December 10 at 3 p.m. at Brevard- Davidson River Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to BDRPC or TRH Hospice.
