George Kahl

The Reverend George Calvin Kahl, 87, of Brevard, NC died peacefully August 11, 2009.
He is survived by his wife Rachel Beatty Kahl, and daughters, Ruth Kahl Barrett and Anita Kahl Baum, of Charlotte, NC; sons George Calvin Kahl, Jr., of Conway, SC; John Beatty Kahl, of Richfield, NC; sons-in-law Joseph Barrett and Jay Baum; daughters-in-law Diane Kahl and Cindy Kahl. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Catherine Kahl.
George was born to the late George Henry and Ruth Mae Bream Kahl on June 26, 1922 in Hagerstown, MD. He was graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University in 1950, the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC in 1953, and ordained as a Lutheran pastor in Statesville, NC.
He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II. He was involved in the Leyte Invasion in the Philippines and in the occupation of Japan. He became an Army Chaplain and retired a Lieutenant Colonel. In 1975, he became a pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Brevard, NC serving there 6 years.
Pastor George, as he was fondly known to many, loved people and served our Lord Jesus Christ in many capacities including prison work and teen and adult retreats. He had a thorough knowledge of scripture and faithfully lived what he believed. His family and friends greatly loved him. Photography, cooking, gardening, and fishing were a few of his many hobbies and talents. He traveled the world extensively during the course of his military career. Many will fondly remember his quick wit.
Interment is 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2009 at the Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery on 1270 Old US Highway 70 W, Black Mountain, NC (828) 669-0684.
The memorial service will be at 2:00 the same afternoon at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 22 Fisher Road (North Broad at Fisher), Brevard, NC.
