Ema Stone

Ema Miriam Stone, of Brevard, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, at her home.

She is survived by her daughter, Margie, and grandchildren, Emily (17), Matthew (14) and Abigail (12).

She is also survived by two beloved sisters-in-law, Nilda Dal Monte, of Chicago, and Rebecca Sharon, of Seymour, Mo .; along with many nieces and nephews.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Melvin; and her brothers, Antenor, Laertes and her twin brother, Ruben.

Born to Antenor Dal Monte and Ema Amanda Dal Monte in Montevideo, Uruguay, May 1, 1922, she began teaching home economics at The Crandon Institute in Montevideo at the age of 19. She then received a scholarship to Iowa State University, where she studied domestic science. While at Iowa State, she roomed with Rebecca (Stone) Sharon, who introduced her to her brother, the man who would be her husband for 64 years.

The couple lived in Uruguay during their early years of marriage and then settled in Wisconsin, where they both taught Spanish. She continued her education at the University of Wisconsin and received her master's degree in Spanish literature.

Retiring in North Carolina in the 80s, she and her husband enjoyed square dancing, gardening, Hiking and camping. They were active members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Transylvania County for many years.

During these years, she also enjoyed developing her creative abilities; becoming an accomplished weaver and member of the French Broad Weavers.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 28, 2017, at the English Chapel, English Chapel Bridge Dr., in Pisgah Forest National Park, just past the Visitor's Center. All who knew her are invited to come and share in the celebration of her life.
