Dan Holler

Our beloved Dan Holler, husband, father, brother, friend and joyous companion, died at Transylvania Regional Hospital in Brevard, NC, at midday on Friday, March 8, with his family by his side.  Dan F. Holler, Jr was born on October 4, 1941 in Raleigh, NC to proud and loving parents Dan F. Holler, Sr, and Harriet Lee McGoogan.  He grew up in Raleigh, and attended NC State University, his bedrock home team (Go Wolfpack!).  Dan transferred to UNC at Chapel Hill and graduated with a degree in business.

An outgoing and infectiously happy man, Dan gathered and maintained treasured friends from first grade, through Needam Broughton High School in Raleigh, through his college years, and through his long and distinctive working career.  Dan spent nearly 30 years in medical sales, mostly for American Hospital Supply Corporation (now Baxter International).  After an early retirement in that field, Dan stepped into his next arena as a financial adviser for Legg-Mason Investments in Williamsburg, Virginia.  This work, and the trust it required, allowed him to help other people, the thing he loved best.

After retiring from the financial world, Dan continued to find new adventures.  As a gifted story teller, Dan reveled as a tour guide in Colonial Williamsburg.  With a move to the Shenandoah Valley in Waynesboro, Virginia, Dan and his wife shared farming, Dan raising his Hereford cattle and Shirley her Angora goats.  Finally, Dan settled with Shirley in Western North Carolina to enjoy being close to family.

Dan Holler loved golf, the game itself, the camaraderie with his partners, and the places it took him, best of all The Old Course at Saint Andrews, Scotland.  He especially treasured 38 years of golf outings with his beloved CharCol/AHS close friends.

Dan was a community minded man, a give-back man, who worked tirelessly for his Christ Episcopal Church in Mathews, Virginia, serving several terms on the Vestry, and pitching in at everything from auctioneer at the Fall Fair, to usher, to leadership of committees calling two priests.  Dan also gave valuable board leadership in growing Mathews County library to the height of recognition for its librarian at The White House, honoring exceptional libraries serving smaller communities.

Above all, Dan loved his family.  He leaves to celebrate his life yet grieve his passing his devoted wife of 42 years, Shirley Anne Holler, his remarkable son Jeff Holler and his dear wife Sara Holler, his precious granddaughter Emily Holler, his adored grandson Colton Holler, his lovely granddaughter Lily Checket, his daughter Kristin Holler and her husband BJ Checket, and his sister Nancy Holler McGrady, as well as many cousins.

A memorial service and true celebration of Dan’s life will be held in the coming months, at a time when all of us who held him dear are not in such grief as now, and when the jokes (he loved his jokes!) and abounding stories can flow and reflect this irreplaceable and extraordinary man.
