Charles R. Smith



Charles R. Smith of Matthews, NC, formerly of Brevard, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at his residence.

He was born in Hornell, NY on October 9, 1918 to the late Jesse C. and Alice Hackett Smith. Mr. Smith was a 1936 graduate of Hornell High School and was a 1939 graduate of Tri-State College in Angola, IN where he received a certificate in surveying. In March of 1952, he received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He worked for several engineering firms while going to school from 1947-1951. One of his highlights was the construction of the Broome County Airport as an Assistant Engineer. His duties were computations of quantities, preparation of estimates, design of pavement details, and layout schedules for field parties. In 1952 he went to work for IBM (International Business Machines) in Poughkeepsie, NY where he was the Project Facilities Manager responsible for new plant design and construction. He also worked with IBM in 1969 in Manassas, VA and in 1979 in Charlotte, NC in new plant design and construction. He retired after more than 30 years of engineering and key management positions.

From March 23, 1945 to April 10, 1946, he worked with the Army Corp of Engineers, British Forces, and served in Iran surveying needed roads, bridges, and he also performed recruit training.

Mr. Smith's biggest passion was travel. He vacationed in more than 45 states, Canada, and Mexico.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Marian Keough Smith, whom he married on February 10, 1945.

Surviving are his sons, Mark Smith of Stallings, NC and Martin Smith of Highland, NY; grandsons, Jonathan Smith and Matthew Smith both of Stallings, NC, and Richard Smith of Highland, NY.

Private services will be held.
