Bonnie Whitmire

December 3, 1933 — March 26, 2022

Brevard, NC

Bonnie Galloway Whitmire, 88, joined her husband in Heaven on March 26, 2022. She was born in Transylvania County to the late Avery and Blanche Galloway. In addition to her parents, Bonnie was predeceased by her husband of 68 years and high school sweetheart Boyce A. Whitmire, sisters Marylou Byers, Patricia Lawter, Brenda Scruggs, and stepfather Emmett Moore.

She was a 1952 graduate of Rosman High School where was co-Valedictorian and played basketball. She was a woman of faith and long serving member of Cherryfield Baptist Church where she and Boyce led youth groups for many years and sang in the choir.

She was a beloved mother of two sons and countless young women at the Baptist Maternity Home in Asheville. Bonnie and Boyce dedicated over 10 years to these women in need. She retired from Olin and later from Ecusta in customer service. Camping was a favorite pastime and she and Boyce enjoyed being Campground Hosts in their later years. It is hard to describe the life of such a strong and godly woman throughout her 88 years. She was the oldest of 7 children and helped raise her younger siblings which showed in the love of her family. She was so special, lovingly known as “MawMaw” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be missed by all those who knew her.

Bonnie is survived by sons, Ron B Whitmire (Susan), and Terry L Whitmire (Laurie). Grandchildren Celeste Williams (Sam), Justin Whitmire (Jess), Shannon Ropp, Ashley Owen (Chris), Aaron Whitmire (Alicia) and Heather Whitmire, and eleven great-grandchildren. Brother RayVon Galloway (Carolyn), sisters, Wanda Fisher (Glen) and Bobbie Merrill (Gene), and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to those who assisted in her care these past 6 months, especially Priscilla Galloway.

At Bonnie’s request, there will be a graveside service at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at Mt. Moriah Calvert Cemetery, 890 Calvert Road, Brevard, NC 28712, with Pastor Aaron Guy Whitmire officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to the Baptist Children’s Home of NC, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361, or Cherryfield Baptist Church, 2020 Whitmire Road, Brevard, NC 28712.
