Betty Harrison

Brevard, North Carolina

Betty Johnson Harrison, 94, of Brevard, NC, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2018 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, after a short illness. Born in West Haven, CT, on November 28, 1923, she was the daughter of Arnold D. and Bessie W. Johnson.

She earned her Bachelor's degree from Hartford Seminary, and a Master's degree in Christian Education from Scarritt College in Nashville, TN. She was a Methodist Church Deaconess and served as a missionary in India from 1949 - 1952. Betty was preceded in death by her devoted husband, (Walter) Luke Harrison, who was the love of her life. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brevard, NC, from the time of her marriage in 1956. She was active in her church, singing in the choir, serving on the Evangelism Committee, helping to write a history of the church, and was president of the women's group. Betty was active in Girl Scouting for more than 50 years, loved the outdoors, picnics, and enjoyed the many wonders of nature. College Walk in Brevard was home to Betty for 12 years, and it was the perfect place to live in her later years.

Betty is survived by four daughters and one son: Gail Cotten and husband Dave of Morganton, NC; Bill Harrison and wife Georgene of Spokane, WA; Joan Harrison of Asheville, NC; Lenaire Harrison of Candler, NC; and Susan Johnson and husband David of Waxhaw, NC; grandchildren Scott Cotten and wife Kate, Barbara Guinn and husband Tommy, Steve Harrison, Diane Lemon and husband Brian, Christina Brewer and husband Chris, Corey Johnson and wife Amy, Mitchel Johnson and fiancé Haley White, Trent Johnson and wife Ally; great-grandchildren Rick, Ryan, Rashel, Tasia, Zack, Ava, Kendall, Jackson, and Griffin.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at First United Methodist Church in Brevard at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Brevard First United Methodist Church, 325 N. Broad St, Brevard, NC 28712, or Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
