Augustine Tucker

Augustine "Gus" Washington Tucker, III, 75, formerly of Brevard, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at his home in Edisto Beach, SC. Gus was born June 28, 1941, in Asheville, NC, the son of Augustine W. Tucker, Jr and Helen B. Tucker. After a four year stint in the US Air Force and graduating from Clemson University and UNC-Chapel Hill, he served as a dentist in his hometown of Brevard for more than 40 years.

Gus was a fixture in the community and a charitable giver. After serving as local Elks chapter President, he served two terms as State President of the NC Elks Association, held numerous vestry positions culminating as Sr. Warden of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, was a long-time board member of the Transylvania Endowment Directors Fund of the WNC Community Foundation, and most recently was a member of the Transylvania County Board of Health. Gus had a love for cooking, good food, gardening, reading, his dog, Dandy, and Fox News.

Gus Tucker is survived by his son, Augustine W. Tucker IV of San Antonio, TX; his daughter Helen T. Herpel of Charleston, SC; and his son, Phillip C. Tucker, and wife Amy, of Fayetteville, GA. Gus' wife, Alice M. Tucker, his son, Kenneth St. George Tucker, and grandson, Augustine W. Tucker, V, preceded him in death. Others Gus leaves behind to cherish his memory are numerous extended family members, most notably his brother, Henry Tucker, and five grandchildren: Mary Catherine Tucker, Emily Tucker, and Hannah Tucker of San Antonio, TX; and Caroline Tucker and Jack Tucker of Fayetteville, GA. Special friends, Mark A. Herpel and Christine K. Tucker also survive.

A memorial celebration service will be held Sunday, July 24, 2016, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Brevard, NC. The family plans a private burial.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to The St. Philip's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 256 E. Main St., Brevard, NC 28712. Alternatively, memorials may be made to the Grounds Beautification Fund at Trinity Episcopal Church, PO Box 425, Edisto Island, SC 29438.
