Anne Hansen

December 9, 1930 — January 25, 2019

Brevard, North Carolina

Anne DeLamater Hansen, 88, of Brevard, NC passed away January 25, 2019 at Tore's Home in Brevard. She was born December 7, 1930 in Orange, New Jersey, the only daughter of the late Harold and Marion Baker DeLamater. She attended Miss Beard's School in Orange, then went to Boston where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education at Wheelock College (Class of 1952). In Boston, she met her future husband, John Holmes Hansen, who attended MIT. In 1953, they moved to Ames, Iowa where John pursued graduate studies and Anne taught kindergarten.

Their first child was born in 1957 and soon after they moved to Richmond, Virginia. Several moves for John's jobs followed, and they lived in Wilmington, Delaware and Newport News, Virginia before settling with their three children in Guilford College, North Carolina in 1970 where they lived for the next forty years. Anne went back to teaching, working at Guilford Middle School first as a substitute and then as a full-time teacher's aide, for over fifteen years. More than a thousand students passed through her classes, and she enjoyed keeping in touch as they grew up and became members of her community.

While she was teaching, and after retirement, Anne volunteered with the Girl Scouts, in the Carolina Peaks to Piedmont Council. She served as a troop leader, troop cookie manager, and as a service unit manager, besides helping out casually with many projects. She also enjoyed involvement in her church, St. Andrew's Episcopal, especially working on crafts and as an organizer for the annual Christmas Bazaars for more than a decade. The Girl Scouts, the school, and the church led Anne to the many close friendships with other volunteers and teachers that enriched her life and the lives of her friends. She was always glad to welcome them and hear about their activities and families, and her interest and ready smile are remembered by many.

Anne and John moved to Brevard in 2012 to be near family who could help them with the challenges of aging and declining health. John predeceased Anne after 61 years of marriage.

She is survived by daughters; Marianne (Robert MacPherson) and Susan and son John (Katina Kappas). Other survivors include John Kappas Hansen, Matthew and Michael Easley.

Memorial Services for Anne Hansen will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2019 in the Chapel of St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 2105 W. Market St., Greensboro, NC. A reception will follow the service.

The family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to the staff of Tore's Home of Brevard, particularly to Cindy and Brenda, who were so excellent in their care of Anne.

Memorials may be made to The Girl Scouts (Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont Council.)
