Albert (Bert) Huntington Hatch
Bert Hatch died peacefully in the early morning of Sunday, September 3, 2017 in Flat Rock, NC. The family wishes to thank The Elizabeth House of Four Seasons Hospice Care of Flat Rock for their incredibly kind and compassionate care over the last few days of Bert's life.
Bert Hatch was the husband of Anne Sturgis Hatch and the loving father of four children, David Hatch (deceased), Peggy Sirk, Jim Hatch and Jack Hatch and is additionally survived by a total of 10 children and stepchildren, 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Bert was born in Augusta, GA on August 17, 1931 to J. Milo and Ann W. Hatch. He always spoke lovingly of his childhood in Augusta and of what a wonderful place and time it was for growing up. Most of his Sunday mornings were spent at The Church of the Good Shephard where he was permanently and positively influenced by Reverend Alan Clarkson. He attended college at The University of The South and University of Georgia before attending and graduating from The School of Theology at Sewanee in 1956.
He was steadfast in his support of civil rights in small churches in South Georgia in the late 50's and early 60's. He also led Episcopal Churches in Menomonee Falls, WI, Marietta, GA, Signal Mountain, TN, Dalton, GA and Cincinnati, OH where he was instrumental in the establishment of 2 Women's Shelters before retiring to Edisto Island, SC. In his "retirement" he performed many services at both Holy Trinity and The Episcopal Church of Edisto Island including the weddings of many of his children and grandchildren along with the baptism of even more grandchildren.
The family will be returning his ashes to the soil of his beloved island on September 23, 2017 at 1 pm at The Church of The Holy Trinity, Hwy 174, Edisto Island, SC
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to The Edisto Open Land Trust. The address is P.O. Box 1, Edisto Island, SC 29438; or online at Edisto.org.
