Alan Mercer

Brevard, North Carolina

Alan Charles Mercer, 83, of Brevard, passed away on October 23, 2017. A native of Springville, NY, he was the son of the late Walter C. and Helen S. Mercer. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Dye.
Al was born in Springville, NY where he and Ellie were sweethearts. They began their marriage of 62 years in California, later moving to Florida before retiring to Brevard in 1996. Al used his time and talents as a sales engineer working with the space program, volunteering as a Scout leader, and with youth sports. When he retired he enjoyed time on his computer to write letters to the editor, the family history and his commentaries on world affairs. He volunteered at Meals on Wheels and as an officer for two homeowner associations. Al loved his family, his friends and his country.
His survivors include his wife, Eleanor "Ellie" Cambier Mercer; children Sheri Freeland Mercer (Dennis) of Melbourne, FL and Steven C. Mercer (Cindy) of Rockledge, FL; grandchildren Jennifer McCombs Cleveland (Michael) of Knoxville, TN, Christopher Mercer and Kyle Mercer of St. Petersburg, FL, Lindy Freeland of Melbourne, FL, and Dan Freeland of Orlando, FL; and great-grandchildren Ewan McCombs and Allison McCombs and step-great-grandson Gage Donnelly.
A memorial Service for Al Mercer will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church with Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends during the reception held after the service in the church fellowship hall.
The family gives a special "Thank You" to the many caring friends during his long illness and especially to his caregiver, Sam Fuller, and to Care Partners Hospice.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church, 2459 E. Main Street, Brevard, NC 28712 or Rockledge Presbyterian Church, 921 Rockledge Dr., Rockledge, Florida 32955.
